Recent American studies found a link between gum disease and Alzheimer's disease. Oral bacteria, which enter the bloodstream during chewing and brushing, can travel to the brain and may lead to the deterioration of brain tissue. Traces of poor dental hygiene were found in 4 out of 10 brain samples of patients who died because of Alzheimer’s disease. These traces were not found in any samples from the brains of people who did not have Alzheimer’s.
